Therapeutic Effect of Cefmetazole in Severely Infected Surgical Patients


Abstract
Cefmetazole is new semisynthetic broad spectrum cephamycin. The study reported here was an attempt to comprehensively study in vivo effect of Cefmetazole for 30 severely infected surgical patients treated in Department of Surgery, Busan National University Hospital from July to October 1982. The results were as follows:
1. Sixteen strains of microorganisms were cultured. E. coli was the most common organism (12 strains), and Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Bacteroides, Klebsiella, Proteus, Pseudomonas in orders.
2. The kinds of infection according to organisms were: 4 cases of single infection by (¢¥am (+) organisms, 20 cases of single infections by Gram (-) organisms, and there were 6 cases of mixed infection.
3. Therapeutic effect according to organism proved to be as follows: cured in 3 cases and improved in 1 case of 4 cases of single infection by Gram (+) organism, cured in 14 cases and improved in 4 cases of 20 cases of single infection by Gram (-) organism, cured in 3 cases and improved in 3 cases of 6 cases of mixed infection.
4. The therapeutic results of Cefmetazole against a total of 30 patients with surgical infection turned out to be cured in 20 patients, improved in 8 patients and unchanged in 2 patients.
5. Administration of Cefmetazole to 12 patients who were not responsive to other antibiotics showed a response to be more than improved in 11 patients (91. 7%).
6. The side effect associated with Cefmetazole was urticaria in one patient, which was disappeared two days after discontinual of the drug.
